Update 12/24/01-
it's been a very long time since there was an update. The Vifas are now back at home, with a new living arangement and a nearly dedicated listening room. Power is still my DH220, with a digital XO/EQ and a K2 for the (not yet built) Shiva based subs.

My new stereo setup

Update 2/27/00-
I'm in the process of working out a biamped version of the X3 crossover. Rick has suggested an 800Hz xover point with my 4th order L-R filters.More research is needed. There seems to be some interesting things happening due to the difference in the ZDPs of the M18 and the D75 (about 3 inches). More later.

Update 2/21/00-
A new name, the Vifa X3 or the Vx3 for short (Thnks Rick), is on the way Along with it comes a new logo. Look for updates soon.

Update 2/19/00-
I took them and my Hafler DH220 over to a friend's house for a listening session. The sensitivity of the Vifa 3-ways is only about 87.5dB (1w/1m), but they were geting damn loud, and without a hint of compression. That is, until the Hafler clipped. I have to compliment the designers of the DH220...it has a soft clip feature that's audible, but not damaging. very nice. From what I remember when I first got it, the clipping power into 8 ohms reistive is around 130 or 140W/ch, both driven. Hooked up to Mark's Acurus A250 and it showed where I needed to gasket some things and glue down a few of the crossover parts (buzzzzzzz). Overall an amazing speaker. For everything above 60Hz it blew a pair of NHT Supertwos completely out of the water. I gotta say I love 'em.

Update 2/18/00-
The phase problem has been figured out...somehow I had one speaker reversed. I managed to get the erminal cup wired backwards. It's now taken care of, and they sound amazing.

Update 1/8/00-
I'm done!
I put the boxes together tonight and have been listenign to them for the lats few hours. They are fabulous. There seems to be a nagging phase problem I'm going to track down once I'm back at school, but pther than that...

Update 1/3/00-
The pictures now have their own web page, as they were taking too much space on this one. The pictures now live HERE.

Update: 12/29/99-
Pictures! I got the MDF cut and I'm in the process of assembling and fine trimming the pieces so that the it is perfect. The crossover and drivers arrived just before Christamas. I'll post pictures of those when I can.

Update 12/12/99-
Rick tells me that the design will be completed around the end of this week! That means I might even have a chance to finish the boxes (veneered even!) before break is over. Man that'd be nice. Anyone know of a place that'll make me a set of countersunk baffles on the cheap?

Update: 12/8/99-
I've really getting excited about this one. it's gonna rock. From an email Rick sent me:
I already had the test enclosure ready, so I installed all the
drivers and did some testing. This is the first time that I
have worked with the M18 - it measured very flat and the
-3db point is right on. I put together a crossover tonight
and the driver combination will work very good together.
Update 11/8/99-
The setup is now final- The system will use all Vifa drivers:
  • D27TG-45 for the tweeter, 3.5K on up
  • D75MX-31 3" dome mof for 800-3.5K
  • M18W0-09 for 60ish to 800
These mate to my Shivas (DC-60ish) with the DIY active crossover kit from John Pomann. Power is my Hafler DH220, with biamping as a possibility later on. More updates as they come.
